Joints Overview

Our bodies have 15 main joints:

  • 2 Ankles and 2 Wrists
    • Moves in 6 primary directions
      1. Up
      2. Down
      3. Left
      4. Right
      5. Twist Left
      6. Twist Right
  • 2 Elbows and 2 Knees
    • Move in 2 directions
      1. Extend to hyperextension
      2. Contract
        1. Inside rotation - padmasana
        2. Outside rotation - virasana
  • 2 Shoulders and 2 Hips
    • Move in 7 directions
      1. Up
      2. Down
      3. Left
      4. Right
      5. Twist Left
      6. Twist Right
      7. Extension
  • Neck/Cervical spine
    • Move in 7 directions
      1. Up
      2. Down
      3. Left
      4. Right
      5. Twist Left
      6. Twist Right
      7. Extension
  • Lumbar Spine
    • Moves in 6 directions
  • Thoracic Spine
  • Fingers and toes also have their own joints

As we create flows in yoga we want to make sure to activate each joint in each direction at least once.
